Pakistan is now among the top five countries sending students to UK universities, and at the rate the number is growing, we may top the list very soon.
Despite the higher number of students landing every year in the UK, the student visa rejection rate is also much higher than usual, and it often happens due to self-counselling or a weak case.
And that is why we have come up with this guide to help you get admission to your dream universities without the fear of student visa rejection.
So, before you start shortlisting universities or booking test slots, there is one thing you have to get right: the study visa.
The UK study visa process is not as scary as it looks once you understand it step by step. In this guide, we have covered everything from the documents you need to what the visa costs in Pakistani rupees and how long the whole thing takes.
And if at any point you feel like you need a hand, EDU Advance is right here in Lahore, helping Pakistani students get to UK universities without the confusion and guesswork. Read this guide first, then come talk to us.
What is a UK Study Visa, and Who Needs One from Pakistan?
If you are a Pakistani student planning to study in the United Kingdom for more than six months, you will need a UK Student Visa. This visa replaced what used to be called the Tier 4 General Student Visa and is now part of the UK Points-Based Immigration System.
There are three types of study-related UK visas:
UK Student Visa: For degree-level courses longer than six months. This is what most Pakistani students apply for.
Short-Term Study Visa: For English language or short courses lasting six to eleven months.
Child Student Visa: For students between 4 and 17 years of age enrolled in a private institution.
One important thing to know: Pakistani students currently make up around 8 percent of all new international student enrollments at UK universities. So yes, this is a well-travelled path and a completely achievable goal.

What Are the UK Study Visa Requirements for Pakistani Students?
The UK visa requirements are actually quite straightforward. The key is having everything in order before you start the online application. Here is what you need:
1. CAS Letter from a UK University
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is the first thing you need. Your UK university issues this letter after you accept your offer and meet all conditions. It contains a unique reference number you must include in your visa application. Without a CAS, you simply cannot apply.
2. Valid Passport
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your studies and must have blank pages available for stamping. Double-check this before you do anything else.
3. Proof of English Proficiency
Most UK universities ask for an IELTS or PTE score. Some may accept a Medium of Instruction letter from your previous institution. Always confirm with your specific university because requirements vary by course and institution.
4. Financial Evidence
This is where most Pakistani students feel stressed, but it is manageable when you plan. You must show enough funds to cover:
- One full year of tuition fees (or the remaining amount after your deposit)
- Living expenses for up to nine months: GBP 12,006 if studying in London, or GBP 9,207 outside London
- These funds must sit in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before you apply. This is a strict rule. Do not let the balance drop even once during the 28 days.
5. TB Test Certificate
Pakistan is on the list of countries where this is mandatory. You must get your TB test done at a UKVI-approved clinic in Pakistan. The certificate is only valid for six months, so do not get it done too early. The test is done through IOM clinics and costs around PKR 13,000.
6. Academic Certificates and Transcripts
Provide certified copies of your previous qualifications. All documents must match the details already listed in your CAS letter. Any mismatch can cause delays or refusal.

How to Apply for a UK Study Visa from Pakistan
The actual application is done online, which makes things easier. But there is a sequence to it, and jumping ahead tends to cause problems.
Get Your University Offer and CAS Letter First
It starts with your university offer. Once you accept the offer and pay the deposit the university requires, they will issue your CAS, usually within 1 to 3 weeks. Everything else depends on this document, so do not rush the next steps until you have it in hand.
Fill out the Online Application on gov.uk.
After you receive your CAS, go to the official UK government website and fill out the Student Visa application form. You will enter your CAS reference number along with your personal and financial details. One thing people often overlook here: if you have had a visa refused before, from any country, you have to declare it. The Home Office already has that information. Hiding it is far more damaging than disclosing it.

Pay the Visa Fee and Health Surcharge
Once the form is done, you pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge online. Before you get to that step, call your bank and ask them to enable international online transactions. A surprising number of Pakistani banks have these blocked by default, and students only find out when the payment fails at the last moment.
Book Your Biometrics Appointment at VFS Global
After payment, book your biometrics appointment at VFS Global. They have centres in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, and Mirpur. Your fingerprints and photograph are taken there. Your passport stays with VFS while your application is being processed, so do not plan any travel during this time.
Wait for the Decision and Track Your Application
Decisions usually come within three weeks of your biometrics. Track your status through the VFS portal and set up SMS alerts so you do not have to check the page every hour. If it goes past three weeks, that does not always mean bad news. Peak seasons between June and September naturally slow things down a little.
Collect Your Passport and Pick Up Your BRP in the UK
Once approved, VFS returns your passport. When you land in the UK, collect your Biometric Residence Permit from the designated post office within 10 days of arrival. The address is usually specified in your visa approval letter, so keep that document with you when you travel.
What is the UK Study Visa Price in Pakistan?
This is the first question every student asks us, and honestly, it is a fair one. A lot of people get surprised midway through the process because they only budgeted for the visa fee and did not account for everything else that comes with it. So here is the full honest breakdown.
The Visa Application Fee
The visa application fee is GBP 490, which works out to roughly PKR 182,000 at the current exchange rate. This is paid directly on the UK government website during your online application. Keep in mind that exchange rates move, so the PKR figure can shift slightly by the time you apply.
Immigration Health Surcharge
This one catches a lot of students off guard. On top of the visa fee, you pay an Immigration Health Surcharge that gives you full NHS access while you are in the UK. For a one-year Master's program, it is GBP 776. A two-year program doubles that to GBP 1,552. The longer your course, the more you pay upfront. It is calculated per year of study, so factor this in early when you are budgeting.
VFS Service Charges and Biometrics
When you visit VFS Global for your biometrics appointment, there are service charges involved. These come to approximately PKR 20,000 and are paid either at the time of booking or at the centre itself. Check the VFS Pakistan website for the latest accepted payment methods at your nearest centre.
TB Test at the IOM Clinice
The TB test is mandatory for Pakistani applicants and is done at an IOM-approved clinic. It costs around PKR 13,000 and is paid directly at the clinic on the day of your appointment. Since the certificate is only valid for six months, time this carefully relative to your visa application date.
So What Does It All Add Up To?
For a one-year program, the total government fees alone land somewhere between PKR 400,000 and PKR 500,000, depending on the exchange rate when you apply. For a two or three-year course that can push to PKR 600,000 to PKR 700,000 or beyond. And this is before tuition fees, living costs, or flight tickets.
